Seismic network of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) detected a volcano-tectonic earthquake with magnitude M 4.2 at approx. 26 km (16 miles) km depth beneath the southeast flank at 14:21 local time yesterday. The earthquake was located 17 km (11 mile) north-northeast of Pāhala in the vicinity of the Kaʻōiki Pali.
Moderate shaking, with maximum Intensity of V on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale, has been reported across the Island of Hawai'i. HVO recommends to be aware of possible aftershocks that may be felt.
According to HVO Scientist-in-Charge Ken Hon, the earthquake had no apparent effect on Kīlauea or Mauna Loa volcanoes. HVO continues to monitor Kīlauea and other Hawaiian volcanoes for any changes.
The Volcano Alert Level for the volcano will remain at ADVISORY.
