Romantic picture on the wall, perhaps to cheer up staff during cold and dark nights in the winter? The hut was built in the 70s and until the Peristroika period, it was permanently manned by staff from the Institute, to monitor the volcano 24x7. Today, lack of funding and the possibility of monitoring of the volcano with automated and remote instruments makes it unnecessary to have people on location all the time... (Photo: Tom Pfeiffer)
