Stromboli volcano photos

During a visit in mid to late July 2021, Stromboli was showing very regular and typical strombolian activity from several vents. Most notably though, the NE cone produced quite impressive eruptions at intervals of 15-20 minutes. Overall, activity at the volcano in this period was low to medium.

Stromboli volcano (Eolian Islands, Italy): strombolian activity July 2021 (9 imagine)

During the first part of June, activity at Stromboli volcano was one of the most intense periods during several years. At most times, up to 6 or 7 vents were active, most notably the two eastern vents, closely followed and sometimes surpassed by the two western vents.
The following pictures were taken on 9, 11, and 16 June, from various viewpoints and give an idea of this activity.

Dopo piuttosto tranquilla mesi estivi, attività di Stromboli prelevato fino ancora a metà a fine ottobre (è interessante notare che allo stesso tempo con Etna). Le seguenti foto sono state scattate durante i nostri recenti viaggi di gruppo a Vulcano, Stromboli ed Etna in fine ottobre e inizio novembre 2013. L'attività più vigoroso era dalle bocche NW (verso Ginostra) scoppiata a intervalli di 5-15 minuti, l'invio di materiale incandescente per altezze fino a 200-300 m. (Photo: Tom Pfeiffer)

Photographs taken by volcanologist Dr Ingrid Smet when she observed Stromboli’s volcanic activity from 24 to 26 July 2019. During this time span, the volcano remained at a level of higher than usual activity with very frequent Strombolian explosions. Some of these were so strong that at night one could observe the glowing bombs from the village. The lava flows that occurred after the 3 July paroxysm were also still active on the upper parts of the western edge of the Sciara.

Stromboli volcano, Italy: elevated activity 24-26 July 2019 (31 imagine)

In January 2019, magma levels inside Stromboli volcano's conduits rise almost to the rim, producing spectacular activity from several vents. In particular, a large cinder cone has been growing from the NE vent.

Stromboli volcano (Italy): elevated activity in Jan 2019 (20 imagine)

In August and early September 2011, Stromboli's activity was at unusually strong levels. Powerful explosions from the NE vent often sent bombs to more than 500m high, reaching Pizzo and the Bastimento viewing areas (which remained closed most of the time). The northeastern vent produced very powerful and bright explosions of liquid lava, with ejections into all directions reaching several hundred meters in height and throwing incandescent lava bombs over the upper crater slope. During our recent Stromboli to Etna tour, our group climbed Stromboli volcano on 15 July with a mountain guide and were lucky to have excellent weather and very strong activity from several vents. 2014 Stromboli: esplosioni e flusso di lava in mare

After two months of impressive and increasing activity at the summit vents, including several short-lived lava overflows, the magma inside the upper conduits breached the lower flank of the NE crater on the morning of 7 August, causing a massive surge of lava running down the Sciara. Within less than 20 minutes, it reached the sea, for the first time since 2007.
The volcano's plumbing system being "pierced" at a lower point than the summit, the rising magma continued to pour out from the new vent forming a beautiful lava flow. We visited the volcano during 8-12 August: (Photo: Tom Pfeiffer)

An effusive eruption began on Stromboli on 7 August 2014 and continued into Oct. After the first 5-10 days, lava flows no longer reached the sea, but produced varying channels of active lava flows on the upper parts of the slope. Constant rockfalls from these flows provided a fascinating view especially at night. The following photos were taken during our recent tour to Stromboli and Etna from 5-13 Oct 2014.
