Destruction of the quake in an area near Khost city (image: user-submitted)
The 5.9 magnitude quake that hit southeastern Afghanistan early this morning left at least 280 dead and more than 600 injured.
The earthquake's epicenter was approx. 40 km southwest of the provincial capital city of Khost. Its shallow depth only 6-10 km increased the shaking intensity in this area. As it occurred at 1.24 a.m. local time, it caught most people in their sleep. Near the epicenter, entire villages have been almost completely been leveled and the fatality number is likely to increase as search and rescue efforts continue.
Within minutes of the tremor struck, we received reports of shaking felt in up to 300 km distance including the country's capital Kabul. Near the epicenter, shaking reached strong to very strong intensities and lasted up to approx. 1-2 minutes. A user from Khost reported: "At around 1:27 am at night while we were asleep an earthquake shook our house ... for 2 minutes. ... Causalities were reported from Speera, Dandkai Village and particularly Gheeyan District of the Paktika area".
An aftershock of magnitude 4.5 magnitude struck about 30 miles southwest of Khost about an hour later.
Pakistan's Foreign Ministry said that its country will provide assistance in search and rescue as well as medical help to Afghanistan.

Significant magnitude 5.9 earthquake 44 km southwest of Khōst, Afghanistan

5.9 quake 22 Jun 1:24 am (GMT +4:30)
5.9 quake 22 Jun 1:24 am (GMT +4:30)
The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude 5.9 quake in Afghanistan near Khōst, only 18 minutes ago. The earthquake hit after midnight on Wednesday, June 22nd, 2022, at 12:54 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), which listed it as a magnitude 5.9 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.8, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Khōst (pop. 96,100) located 44 km from the epicenter, Zaṟah Sharan (pop. 7,400) 71 km away, Bannu (pop. 49,000) 99 km away, Baraki Barak (pop. 22,300) 111 km away, and Ghazni (pop. 141,000) 116 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
