A intermediate magnitude 4.6 earthquake was reported early morning near Wabag, Enga Province, Papua New Guinea.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Friday 1 January 2021 at 2:45 am local time at an intermediate depth of 95 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Wabag (pop. 4,000) located 41 km from the epicenter, Mt Hagen (pop. 33,600) 86 km away, and Mendi (pop. 26,300) 113 km away.
