4.8 quake 20 Jan 9:28 am (GMT +8)
An earthquake of magnitude 4.8 occurred in the morning on Wednesday 20 January 2021 at 9:28 am local time near Veruela, Agusan del Sur, Caraga, Philippines, as reported by Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Binucayan (pop. 2,900) located 13 km from the epicenter, Loreto (pop. 5,700) 15 km away, La Paz (pop. 3,600) 17 km away, and Veruela (pop. 18,100) 26 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Bunawan (pop. 15,500) located 29 km from the epicenter, Talacogon (pop. 15,600) 37 km away, Trento (pop. 15,900) 38 km away, Monkayo (pop. 51,400) 50 km away, and Butuan (pop. 309,700) 93 km away.
