4.8 quake Near Zadar, Zadarska, Croatia, 8 Jun 2021 5:59 am (GMT +2)
An earthquake of magnitude 4.8 occurred only 6 minutes ago 14 km southeast of Sibenik, Croatia, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 2 km beneath the epicenter near Sibenik, Grad Šibenik, Sibenik-Knin, Croatia, early morning on Tuesday 8 June 2021 at 5:59 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Ljubostinje (pop. 60) located 8 km from the epicenter.
In Sibenik (pop. 37,100) located 14 km from the epicenter, Vodice (pop. 6,100) 23 km away, Trogir (pop. 11,000) 24 km away, and Kastel Stari (pop. 7,100) 28 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Split (pop. 176,300) located 37 km from the epicenter, Solin (pop. 20,200) 39 km away, Knin (pop. 11,200) 43 km away, and Zadar (pop. 71,300) 82 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
