Magnitude 3.7 earthquake strikes near Provo, Utah County, Utah, USA3.7 quake 9 Jun 1:52 pm (GMT -6)
An earthquake of magnitude 3.7 occurred only 10 minutes ago 33 miles east of Provo, Utah, United States, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 2.2 miles beneath the epicenter near Provo, Utah County, Utah, USA, around noon on Wednesday 9 June 2021 at 1:52 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.7 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Independence (pop. 170) located 11 miles from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Springville (pop. 32,300) located 31 miles from the epicenter, Provo (pop. 115,300) 33 miles away, Orem (pop. 94,500) 34 miles away, Spanish Fork (pop. 37,900) 35 miles away, and Lehi (pop. 58,500) 43 miles away. In Sandy (pop. 87,500, 48 miles away), West Jordan (pop. 111,900, 51 miles away), Salt Lake City (pop. 192,700, 54 miles away), and West Valley City (pop. 136,200, 57 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
