Just 8 minutes ago, a 3.5-magnitude earthquake struck near Bakersfield, Kern County, California, USA. The tremor was recorded in the evening on Friday 2 July 2021 at 9:58 pm local time, at a very shallow depth of 2.7 miles below the surface.
The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.5 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Squirrel Mountain Valley (pop. 550) located 8 miles from the epicenter, and Lake Isabella (pop. 3,500) 9 miles away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Weldon (pop. 2,600) located 11 miles from the epicenter, Alta Sierra (pop. 7,000) 18 miles away, and Arvin (pop. 20,900) 33 miles away. In Oildale (pop. 32,700, 37 miles away), and Bakersfield (pop. 373,600, 38 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
