The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude 5.5 quake in Peru near Trujillo, Provincia de Trujillo, La Libertad, only 19 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early evening on Wednesday 28 July 2021 at 7:32 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the United States Geological Survey, which listed it as a magnitude 5.7 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.3, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Nazareno (pop. 240) located 76 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Santiago de Cao (pop. 22,000) located 79 km from the epicenter, Paijan (pop. 21,100) 87 km away, Chocope (pop. 32,400) 90 km away, Chicama (pop. 14,900) 94 km away, Trujillo (pop. 747,500) 96 km away, Moche (pop. 22,600) 97 km away, Pacasmayo (pop. 29,200) 102 km away, and Chepén (pop. 42,000) 126 km away.
