Update Sun, 1 Aug 2021, 15:36Moderate magnitude 4.6 quake hits 84 km southwest of Santa Barbara, Bolivia in the morning
4.6 quake 1 Aug 11:26 am (GMT -4)
An intermediate to deep magnitude 4.6 earthquake was reported in the morning near Santa Barbara, Departamento de Potosi, Bolivia.
According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit on Sunday 1 August 2021 at 11:26 am local time at an intermediate to considerable depth of 227 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.6 as well.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In San Cristobal de Lipez (pop. 75, 62 km away), Santa Barbara (pop. 2,400, 84 km away), and Tupiza (pop. 22,200, 101 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
