A magnitude 3.3 earthquake near Summerville, Dorchester County, South Carolina, USA, was reported 32 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered the key international and national agency that monitors seismic activity in the US. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 4 miles beneath the epicenter early evening on Monday, September 27th, 2021, at 6:21 pm local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.3 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Centerville (pop. 5,300) located 4 miles from the epicenter, Ladson (pop. 13,800) 4 miles away, and Summerville (pop. 48,800) 5 miles away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Goose Creek (pop. 40,600) located 7 miles from the epicenter, Hanahan (pop. 18,000) 8 miles away, North Charleston (pop. 108,300) 12 miles away, and Mt. Pleasant (pop. 81,300) 20 miles away.

Ladson, Berkeley, South Carolina (5.4 km NE of epicenter) [Map] / Very weak shaking (MMI II) / vibration and rolling / 10-15 s : Very strong it felt like a cement ball is rolling under my house . In the noise it came under the ground it was unbelievable!!  
Hanahan, Berkeley, South Carolina (7.6 km ESE of epicenter) [Map] / Very weak shaking (MMI II) / rattling, vibrating / very short : I was in the garage and felt a vibration that also caused the metal door to rattle like a bass drop had just hit.  
near Centerville, Dorchester, South Carolina (16.6 km W of epicenter) [Map] / Weak shaking (MMI III) / 2-5 s : Watching tv and heard a “boom”. A little creaking of the roof or cathedral ceiling? Lasted 3-4 seconds. Spooked the dog who was snoozing in a bay window!
