An earthquake of magnitude 3.7 occurred only 8 minutes ago 29 km northwest of Pau, France, France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 5 km beneath the epicenter near Pau, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France, late at night on Monday, October 11th, 2021, at 10:45 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Maslacq (pop. 800) located 2 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Mourenx (pop. 8,100) located 7 km from the epicenter, Artix (pop. 3,400) 9 km away, and Orthez (pop. 11,900) 10 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Lons (pop. 13,900) located 25 km from the epicenter, Billère (pop. 14,900) 27 km away, Pau (pop. 82,700) 29 km away, and Dax (pop. 22,300) 44 km away.
