Moderate magnitude 4.9 quake hits 43 km northeast of Denpasar, Indonesia early morning

4.9 quake 16 Oct 4:18 am (GMT +8)
4.9 quake 16 Oct 4:18 am (GMT +8)
A magnitude 4.9 earthquake near Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia, was reported only 12 minutes ago by Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in Indonesia. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Saturday, October 16th, 2021, at 4:18 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.0. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.8.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Kintamani (pop. 87) located 17 km from the epicenter, Bedugul (pop. 20,000) 20 km away, Amlapura (pop. 31,900) 21 km away, Karangasem (pop. 31,900) 22 km away, Klungkung (pop. 27,800) 22 km away, and Ubud (pop. 28,400) 28 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Denpasar (pop. 834,900) located 43 km from the epicenter, and Singaraja (pop. 133,800) 47 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
