Just 29 minutes ago, a 4.5-magnitude earthquake struck near Pinotepa Nacional, Santiago Pinotepa Nacional, Oaxaca, Mexico. The tremor was recorded in the morning on Monday, October 18th, 2021, at 11:10 am local time, at a very shallow depth of 9 km below the surface.
The event was filed by Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.5 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Callejon de Romulo (pop. 490) located 33 km from the epicenter, Santo Domingo Armenta (pop. 2,600) 39 km away, Santiago Tepextla (pop. 1,400) 39 km away, Corralero (pop. 1,700) 39 km away, El Ciruelo (pop. 2,200) 42 km away, San Nicolas (pop. 3,300) 48 km away, Cuajinicuilapa (pop. 10,300) 54 km away, and Pinotepa Nacional (pop. 29,600) 58 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Santa Maria Huazolotitlan (pop. 4,800) located 67 km from the epicenter.
