Significant earthquake of magnitude 5.1 just reported 42 km northeast of Tandag, Philippines

5.1 quake 23 Nov 4:09 pm (GMT +8)
5.1 quake 23 Nov 4:09 pm (GMT +8)
Philippines was shaken near Tandag, Surigao del Sur, Caraga, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.1 only 14 minutes ago, Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near Tandag, Surigao del Sur, Caraga, Philippines, in the afternoon on Tuesday, November 23rd, 2021, at 4:09 pm local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.7 earthquake. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Cortes (pop. 3,000) located 31 km from the epicenter, Burgos (pop. 3,500) 32 km away, Mabahin (pop. 2,300) 37 km away, and Tandag (pop. 29,000) 42 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Tago (pop. 6,300) located 45 km from the epicenter, Cantilan (pop. 9,400) 53 km away, Butuan (pop. 309,700) 111 km away, and Libertad (pop. 250,400) 115 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
