Just 15 minutes ago, a 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Kamaishi, Kamaishi-shi, Iwate, Japan. The tremor was recorded in the afternoon on Wednesday, November 24th, 2021, at 5:06 pm local time, at a moderately shallow depth of 46.7 km below the surface.
The event was filed by Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 5.1 earthquake. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Ōtsuchi (pop. 16,500) located 17 km from the epicenter, Yamada (pop. 20,100) 19 km away, and Kamaishi (pop. 43,100) 20 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
