5.1 quake 3 Mar 8:40 am (GMT -6)
Just 10 minutes ago, a 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck near Tuxtla, San Andrés Tuxtla, Veracruz, Mexico. The tremor was recorded in the morning on Thursday, March 3rd, 2022, at 8:40 am local time, at an intermediate depth of 108 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.4. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.1, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.7, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Isla (pop. 26,300) located 21 km from the epicenter, Tuxtla (pop. 15,500) 33 km away, Tuxtla (pop. 61,800) 37 km away, Carlos A. Carrillo (pop. 18,000) 39 km away, Cosamaloapan (pop. 30,600) 42 km away, Catemaco (pop. 27,600) 43 km away, and Lerdo de Tejada (pop. 18,700) 49 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.

Info: The more agencies report about the same quake and post similar data, the more confidence you can have in the data. It takes normally up to a few hours until earthquake parameters are calculated with near-optimum precision.
