Magnitude 4.7 earthquake strikes near Wellington, Wellington City, New Zealand
4.7 quake 15 May 8:13 am (GMT +12)
4.7 quake 15 May 8:13 am (GMT +12)
An earthquake of magnitude 4.7 occurred in the morning on Sunday, May 15th, 2022, at 8:13 am local time near Wellington, Wellington City, New Zealand, as reported by New Zealand's Earthquake Commission and Geological Survey (GeoNet).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 28.2 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.7 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Paraparaumu (pop. 25,300) located 27 km from the epicenter, Porirua (pop. 50,900) 32 km away, Upper Hutt (pop. 38,400) 42 km away, Khandallah (pop. 8,500) 43 km away, Lower Hutt (pop. 101,200) 43 km away, Wellington (pop. 381,900) 47 km away, and Levin (pop. 19,800) 55 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Masterton (pop. 20,700) located 81 km from the epicenter, Blenheim (pop. 26,600) 95 km away, and Palmerston North (pop. 76,000) 96 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.

Info: The more agencies report about the same quake and post similar data, the more confidence you can have in the data. It takes normally up to a few hours until earthquake parameters are calculated with near-optimum precision.
