Moderate magnitude 4.7 quake hits 86 km south of Miyanoura, Japan after midnight

Just 20 minutes ago, a 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Miyanoura, Kumage-gun, Kagoshima, Japan. The tremor was recorded after midnight on Wednesday, May 18th, 2022, at 12:34 am local time, at a moderately shallow depth of 60 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.7 as well. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.7.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Kurio (pop. 1,800) located 73 km from the epicenter, Koseda (pop. 2,300) 81 km away, Nagata (pop. 1,200) 86 km away, and Miyanoura (pop. 6,500) 86 km away.
