Moderate magnitude 4.4 earthquake 44 km northeast of Tokyo, Japan

A moderately shallow magnitude 4.4 earthquake was reported in the afternoon near Tokyo, Japan.
According to Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), the quake hit on Sunday, July 24th, 2022, at 5:29 pm local time at a moderately shallow depth of 44.4 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Iwai (pop. 42,500) located 0 km from the epicenter, Mitsukaidō (pop. 41,100) 8 km away, Noda (pop. 121,400) 11 km away, Moriya (pop. 56,600) 16 km away, Ushiku (pop. 80,000) 23 km away, Tsukuba (pop. 175,600) 25 km away, and Saitama (pop. 1,193,400) 27 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Tokyo (pop. 8,336,600) located 44 km from the epicenter, Mito (pop. 246,500) 60 km away, and Yokohama (pop. 3,574,400) 72 km away.
