Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.5 just reported 32 km southeast of Juchitan de Zaragoza, Mexico
4.5 quake 8 Aug 6:34 am (GMT -5)
An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 occurred early morning on Monday, August 8th, 2022, at 6:34 am local time near Juchitan de Zaragoza, Heroica Ciudad de Juchitán de Zaragoza, Oaxaca, Mexico, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at an intermediate depth of 115 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.5 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.2.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Colonia Puerto Angel (pop. 11) located 4 km from the epicenter, San Dionisio del Mar (pop. 3,100) 5 km away, Las Amilpas (pop. 8,800) 19 km away, Union Hidalgo (pop. 13,700) 22 km away, Santa Maria Xadani (pop. 7,600) 28 km away, Juchitan de Zaragoza (pop. 74,800) 32 km away, Salina Cruz (pop. 76,600) 47 km away, Ixtepec (pop. 25,400) 47 km away, and Santo Domingo Tehuantepec (pop. 42,100) 51 km away.
