4.4 quake 8 Aug 1:44 pm (GMT -7)
4.4 quake 8 Aug 1:44 pm (GMT -7)
An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 occurred only 10 minutes ago 38 miles southeast of South Lake Tahoe, California, United States, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 3.2 miles beneath the epicenter near South Lake Tahoe, El Dorado County, California, USA, around noon on Monday, August 8th, 2022, at 1:44 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.4 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.4.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Coleville (pop. 500) located 3 miles from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Topaz Ranch Estates (pop. 1,500) located 11 miles from the epicenter, Smith Valley (pop. 1,600) 15 miles away, Smith (pop. 1000) 17 miles away, Gardnerville Ranchos (pop. 11,300) 26 miles away, Gardnerville (pop. 5,700) 30 miles away, and Gardnerville (pop. 5,700) 30 miles away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include South Lake Tahoe (pop. 21,700) located 38 miles from the epicenter, and Reno (pop. 241,400) 68 miles away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
