Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN) reported a magnitude 4.4 quake in Mexico near Puerto Escondido, San Pedro Mixtepec -Dto. 22 -, Oaxaca, only 30 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early evening on Monday, August 8th, 2022, at 6:57 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 7 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.4 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.4.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Mandingas (pop. 190) located 1 km from the epicenter, Puerto Escondido (pop. 25,900) 4 km away, Brisas de Zicatela (pop. 9,800) 9 km away, and Santa Maria Colotepec (pop. 1,400) 14 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in San Gabriel Mixtepec (pop. 3,500) located 21 km from the epicenter, Santos Reyes Nopala (pop. 5,200) 23 km away, and Rio Grande (pop. 12,900) 41 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Miahuatlan de Porfirio Diaz (pop. 23,900) located 69 km from the epicenter.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
