Moderate magnitude 4.7 earthquake 95 km northwest of Manta, Ecuador

4.7 quake 13 Aug 2:06 am (GMT -5)
4.7 quake 13 Aug 2:06 am (GMT -5)
An earthquake of magnitude 4.7 occurred early morning on Saturday, August 13th, 2022, at 2:06 am local time near Manta, Cantón Manta, Provincia de Manabi, Ecuador, as reported by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.6 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.6, and the Institute of Geophysics of the National Polytechnic School in Quito (IGEPN) at magnitude 5.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Caracas (pop. 37,100) located 80 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Manta (pop. 183,200) located 95 km from the epicenter, Montecristi (pop. 18,400) 105 km away, Portoviejo (pop. 170,300) 116 km away, and Chone (pop. 44,800) 117 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
