A magnitude 4.0 earthquake near Homer, Kenai Peninsula, Alaska, USA, was reported only 6 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered the key international and national agency that monitors seismic activity in the US. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate depth of 55 miles beneath the epicenter early afternoon on Tuesday, August 16th, 2022, at 2:06 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.0 as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include English Bay (pop. 250) located 13 miles from the epicenter, Port Graham (pop. 180) 15 miles away, and Seldovia (pop. 280) 23 miles away. In Homer (pop. 5,500, 37 miles away), Diamond Ridge (pop. 1,200, 39 miles away), Anchor Point (pop. 1,900, 41 miles away), and Fritz Creek (pop. 1,900, 48 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
