4.2 quake 17 Aug 8:17 pm (GMT -5)
An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 occurred in the evening on Wednesday, August 17th, 2022, at 8:17 pm local time near Minatitlan, Minatitlán, Veracruz, Mexico, as reported by Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at an intermediate to considerable depth of 175 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.2 earthquake as well.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Candido Aguilar (pop. 290, 2 km away), Minatitlan (pop. 112,000, 55 km away), Jaltipan de Morelos (pop. 32,800, 57 km away), Cosoleacaque (pop. 22,500, 58 km away), Las Choapas (pop. 42,700, 59 km away), Nanchital de Lazaro Cardenas del Rio (pop. 25,300, 63 km away), Acayucan (pop. 50,900, 69 km away), and Agua Dulce (pop. 36,100, 78 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
