Moderate 4.0 quake hits near Athens, Nomarchía Athínas, Attica, Greece

4.0 quake 3 Sep 11:27 am (GMT +3)
4.0 quake 3 Sep 11:27 am (GMT +3)
A magnitude 4.0 earthquake near Athens, Nomarchía Athínas, Attica, Greece, was reported only 11 minutes ago by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter in the morning on Saturday, September 3rd, 2022, at 11:27 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.1. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.0, and the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) at magnitude 3.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Kallithea (pop. 700) located 3 km from the epicenter, Thebes (pop. 22,000) 8 km away, and Chalcis (pop. 59,100) 23 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Acharnes (pop. 99,300) located 39 km from the epicenter, Petroúpolis (pop. 59,000) 39 km away, Peristeri (pop. 140,000) 42 km away, Nikaia (pop. 89,400) 45 km away, Athens (pop. 664,000) 47 km away, Piraeus (pop. 163,700) 47 km away, and Kallithea (pop. 100,600) 48 km away.
