An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 occurred only 9 minutes ago 2 miles northeast of Santa Rosa, California, United States, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 4.7 miles beneath the epicenter near Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, California, USA, early evening on Tuesday, September 13th, 2022, at 6:39 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.4 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Santa Rosa (pop. 175,000) located 2 miles from the epicenter, Windsor (pop. 27,500) 8 miles away, and Rohnert Park (pop. 42,400) 9 miles away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Petaluma (pop. 60,400) located 17 miles from the epicenter, Napa (pop. 80,400) 26 miles away, and Novato (pop. 55,500) 26 miles away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Vallejo (pop. 121,300) located 35 miles from the epicenter, Fairfield (pop. 113,000) 39 miles away, Vacaville (pop. 96,800) 40 miles away, and Sacramento (pop. 490,700) 66 miles away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
