Moderate magnitude 4.2 earthquake 9 km northeast of Cenova, Italy

4.2 quake 22 Sep 3:40 pm (GMT +2)
4.2 quake 22 Sep 3:40 pm (GMT +2)
The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude 4.2 quake in Italy near Cenova, Provincia di Genova, Liguria, only 14 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early afternoon on Thursday, September 22nd, 2022, at 3:40 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.2 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Viganego (pop. 190) located 4 km from the epicenter, and Cenova (pop. 580,200) 9 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Serra Riccò (pop. 7,900) located 9 km from the epicenter, raparro (pop. 27,000) 20 km away, Chiavari (pop. 26,600) 28 km away, Sestri Levante (pop. 17,000) 36 km away, and Novi Ligure (pop. 26,000) 39 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Savona (pop. 58,300) located 47 km from the epicenter, and Alexandria (pop. 64,200) 60 km away.
