Magnitude 4.8 earthquake strikes near Eureka, Humboldt County, California, USA

4.8 quake 24 Sep 11:27 am (GMT -8)
The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 4.8 quake in the United States near Eureka, Humboldt County, California, only 11 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Saturday, September 24th, 2022, at 11:27 am local time at a very shallow depth of 1.5 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 4.9 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.6, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.6, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.8.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Ferndale (pop. 1,400) located 34 miles from the epicenter, Rio Dell (pop. 3,400) 39 miles away, Fortuna (pop. 12,000) 39 miles away, Humboldt Hill (pop. 3,400) 43 miles away, Pine Hills (pop. 3,100) 45 miles away, Eureka (pop. 27,000) 47 miles away, Bayside (pop. 17,100) 53 miles away, Arcata (pop. 17,800) 54 miles away, and McKinleyville (pop. 15,200) 57 miles away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either
