4.2 quake 27 Sep 12:43 pm (GMT -10)
A moderately shallow magnitude 4.2 earthquake was reported around noon near Hilo, Hawaii County, Hawaii, USA.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Tuesday, September 27th, 2022, at 12:43 pm local time at a moderately shallow depth of 20 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2 as well. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 4.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Pāhala (pop. 1,400) located 6 miles from the epicenter, and Volcano Village (pop. 2,600) 17 miles away.
