Significant 5.1 quake hits near Santo, Luganville, Sanma Province, Vanuatu

5.1 quake 27 Nov 12:59 pm (GMT +11)
A magnitude 5.1 earthquake near Santo, Luganville, Sanma Province, Vanuatu, was reported only 25 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 18 km beneath the epicenter around noon on Sunday, November 27th, 2022, at 12:59 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by Geoscience Australia (GeoAu), which listed it as a magnitude 5.1 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Norsup (pop. 3,000) located 28 km from the epicenter, and Santo (pop. 13,400) 40 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Port-Olry (pop. 2,000) located 94 km from the epicenter.
