Moderate magnitude 4.5 earthquake 37 km southwest of Argostoli, Greece

4.5 quake 30 Nov 1:46 am (GMT +2)
4.5 quake 30 Nov 1:46 am (GMT +2)
An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 occurred only 20 minutes ago 37 km southwest of Argostoli, Greece, the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 6.7 km beneath the epicenter near Argostoli, Kefallonia, Ionian Islands, Greece, early morning on Wednesday, November 30th, 2022, at 1:46 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), which listed it as a magnitude 4.6 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.4, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.5, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.4.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Kaminarata (pop. 240) located 31 km from the epicenter, Lixouri (pop. 3,800) 34 km away, Argostoli (pop. 9,800) 37 km away, Valsamata (pop. 1000) 45 km away, Samos (pop. 1,300) 53 km away, Poros (pop. 1,100) 60 km away, Katastari (pop. 1,400) 63 km away, and Ithaki (pop. 1,800) 64 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Zakynthos (pop. 11,500) located 76 km from the epicenter.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
