5.2 quake 15 Jan 10:37 pm (GMT +1)
5.2 quake 15 Jan 10:37 pm (GMT +1)
An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 occurred only 5 minutes ago 22 km northeast of Tirana, Albania, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near Tirana, Tirana District, Albania, late at night on Sunday, January 15th, 2023, at 10:37 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.7 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Bulqizë (pop. 11,200) located 17 km from the epicenter, Burela (pop. 15,400) 19 km away, Kruje (pop. 21,300) 21 km away, Tirana (pop. 374,800) 22 km away, Latsch (pop. 24,800) 34 km away, Episkopi (pop. 14,800) 43 km away, and Durres (pop. 122,000) 50 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Podgorica (pop. 236,900) located 128 km from the epicenter.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
