4.2 quake 27 Dec 3:59 am (GMT +2)
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 2 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2 as well. A third agency, the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Phalasarna (pop. 21) located 38 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Kissamos (pop. 4,200) located 45 km from the epicenter, Gialos (pop. 870) 54 km away, Paleochora (pop. 2,400) 58 km away, Agia Marina (pop. 2,000) 69 km away, Mourniés (pop. 5,300) 77 km away, Chania (pop. 53,900) 79 km away, and Souda (pop. 6,700) 83 km away.
If you felt it, report it through our site or app right now!
