Small magnitude 3.1 earthquake 13 miles southeast of Mammoth Lakes, California, United States

The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 3.1 quake in the United States near Mammoth Lakes, Mono County, California, only 9 minutes ago. The earthquake hit after midnight on Thursday 22 April 2021 at 12:00 am local time at a very shallow depth of 5 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 2.8.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Aspen Springs (pop. 65) located 4 miles from the epicenter, and Mammoth Lakes (pop. 7,900) 13 miles away. In West Bishop (pop. 2,600, 22 miles away), Dixon Lane-Meadow Creek (pop. 2,600, 23 miles away), and Big Pine (pop. 1,800, 38 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
