Just 6 minutes ago, a 3.1-magnitude earthquake struck near Portola, Plumas County, California, USA. The tremor was recorded early morning on Sunday 23 May 2021 at 2:18 am local time, at a very shallow depth of 1.3 miles below the surface.
The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.1 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Lake Davis (pop. 45) located 1 miles from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Portola (pop. 1,900) located 4 miles from the epicenter. In East Quincy (pop. 2,500, 23 miles away), Susanville (pop. 15,200, 40 miles away), Truckee (pop. 16,300, 40 miles away), Sun Valley (pop. 19,300, 41 miles away), Reno (pop. 241,400, 42 miles away), and Sparks (pop. 96,100, 45 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
