4.2 quake 23 May 7:57 am (GMT -3)
The quake hit at an intermediate to considerable depth of 189 km beneath the epicenter near San Antonio de los Cobres, Departamento de Los Andes, Salta, Argentina, in the morning on Sunday 23 May 2021 at 7:57 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the United States Geological Survey, which listed it as a magnitude 4.2 earthquake as well.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In San Antonio de los Cobres (pop. 4,000, 88 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
