3.0 quake 29 Jul 10:48 pm (GMT -10)
An earthquake of magnitude 3.0 occurred late at night on Thursday 29 July 2021 at 10:48 pm local time near Hilo, Hawaii County, Hawaii, USA, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 3.8 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.3.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Fern Forest (pop. 930) located 9 miles from the epicenter, Volcano Village (pop. 2,600) 10 miles away, Hawaiian Acres (pop. 2,700) 15 miles away, Mountain View (pop. 3,900) 15 miles away, and Ainaloa (pop. 3,000) 16 miles away. In Hawaiian Beaches (pop. 4,300, 20 miles away), Hawaiian Paradise Park (pop. 11,400, 21 miles away), and Hilo (pop. 43,300, 28 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
