Small magnitude 3.1 earthquake 6 miles northwest of Stanley, Idaho, United States

A shallow magnitude 3.1 earthquake was reported in the afternoon near Stanley, Custer County, Idaho, USA.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Saturday, September 11th, 2021, at 4:37 pm local time at a shallow depth of 6.2 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.1 earthquake as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Stanley (pop. 68) located 6 miles from the epicenter. In Challis (pop. 1000, 45 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
