Magnitude 5.0 earthquake strikes near Pariaman, Sumatra Barat, Indonesia

An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 occurred in the afternoon on Sunday, September 12th, 2021, at 4:02 pm local time near Pariaman, Sumatra Barat, Indonesia, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at an intermediate depth of 75 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.

Weak shaking might have been felt in Pariaman (pop. 92,200) located 58 km from the epicenter, Bukittinggi (pop. 98,700) 91 km away, and Padang (pop. 840,400) 93 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Solok (pop. 48,400) located 120 km from the epicenter, and Payakumbuh (pop. 121,600) 122 km away.
