3.6 quake 12 Sep 6:26 am (GMT -5)
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Sunday, September 12th, 2021, at 6:26 am local time at a very shallow depth of 5.2 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.6 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Hermleigh (pop. 350) located 11 miles from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Snyder (pop. 11,800) located 15 miles from the epicenter, Vista (pop. 1,300) 23 miles away, Sweetwater (pop. 10,800) 25 miles away, and Colorado City (pop. 4,100) 29 miles away.
