The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 33 miles beneath the epicenter near Alaska City, Anchorage, Alaska, USA, in the morning on Friday, August 5th, 2022, at 11:29 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 3.4 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.4.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Susitna (pop. 18, 20 miles away), Big Lake (pop. 3,400, 37 miles away), Meadow Lakes (pop. 7,600, 46 miles away), Knik-Fairview (pop. 14,900, 48 miles away), Alaska City (pop. 298,700, 50 miles away), Tanaina (pop. 8,200, 52 miles away), and Wasilla (pop. 9,300, 52 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
