A magnitude 4.2 earthquake near Jhelum, Jhelum District, Punjab, Pakistan, was reported only 19 minutes ago by India's National Center for Seismology (NCS), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Tuesday, September 27th, 2022, at 6:05 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.2 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Jhelum (pop. 145,000) located 12 km from the epicenter, Sarai Alamgir (pop. 44,100) 15 km away, New Mirpur (pop. 124,400) 24 km away, and Kharian (pop. 81,400) 31 km away.

Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Gujar Khan (pop. 69,400) located 43 km from the epicenter, Mandi Bahauddin (pop. 129,700) 44 km away, Lalamusa (pop. 65,200) 44 km away, Rawalpindi (pop. 1,743,100) 87 km away, and Islamabad (pop. 601,600) 99 km away.
