An earthquake of magnitude 3.6 occurred early morning on Saturday, October 1st, 2022, at 3:45 am local time near Requena, Valencia, Spain, as reported by Spain's Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 5 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 3.6 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.6.

Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Requena (pop. 21,300) located 7 km from the epicenter, and Utiel (pop. 12,400) 8 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Chiva (pop. 14,200) located 35 km from the epicenter, Lliria (pop. 22,700) 45 km away, Benaguasil (pop. 11,000) 46 km away, Ribarroja del Turia (pop. 20,500) 47 km away, Puebla de Vallbona (pop. 20,400) 49 km away, and La Eliana (pop. 16,600) 50 km away. In Valencia (pop. 814,200, 64 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
