Etna (Sicily, Italy): (20 Jan) Last night's activity of vigorous and near-constant strombolian explosions from the eastern summit vent of the New SE crater continued to increase, but judging from webcam imagery, it did not quite reach the intensity of previous paroxysms with true lava fountains. Read more...
During the most intense phase, starting around 1:45 am local time, a new lava flow was emitted from either the same vent at the summit of the New SE crater or a fissure beneath it, and descended approx. 200-300 m to the flat area at its northeastern base.

The explosive eruption of the volcano continues. Near-constant vulcanian activity is characterized by occasional strong explosions as it occurred today. Read more...The eruption started at Suwanosejima volcano at about 15:50 local time. A dense dark ash plume rose to estimated 6,000 ft (1,828 m) altitude and drifted W. Ejected blocks reached distance approx. 400 m away from the crater.
The warning bulletin states that ballistic impacts of volcanic bombs and pyroclastic flows could affect an area of about 2 km distance from the main crater. [meno]

The eruption continues on its gradually increasing trend. Pyroclastic flows - turbulent and hot avalanches of hot lava rocks, ash and volcanic gasses mixed together - are being released from the growing dome and now descend the SW flank of the volcano. During the past hours, activity from the New SE crater has been increasing significantly and is currently showing intense and near-constant strombolian explosions. It seems very much as if it is heading for another paroxysm in the next hours if not less. Read more...
The volcanic tremor signal is also on an increasing trend.
During most of the day, when visibility allowed views, there were small and irregular ash emissions, likely related to smaller explosions from the New SE crater. In the evening, constant glow and intermittent explosions were visible. These have been increasing significantly during the past few hours. [meno]

Stromboli (Eolian Islands, Italy): A short phase of elevated activity occurred at the volcano last night. A small surge of magma apparently resulted in a series of lava flows from the northern vents onto the upper Sciara del Fuoco, generating beautiful incandescent rockfalls on the steep slope. None of the flows reached more than about 100-200 m length and none remained active very long. Read more...
Generally, activity at the volcano has been at the lower end of the scale, with relatively few and generally weak strombolian explosions from the "usual" vents in the crater terrace.

Yesterday evening, activity at the volcano increased quickly into another phase of lava fountaining, known as paroxysm, from the New SE crater. Read more...
It followed the slow effusion of a lava flow from the same vent that had started in the morning. It is thought that the lava effusion during the da preceding the eruption at night was the result of fresh, gas-rich magma rising in the conduits, and pushing the older, largely degassed magma out first, which would explain the lava effusion.
The peak of the intense eruptive phase was around 9:30 pm local time. The eruption produced a tall ash column that rose to 4000 m altitude and drifted south and southeast. The Ash Advisory Center of Toulouse relayed reports of ash falls in the village of Fleri on the SE side of Etna. [meno]

The effusive eruption of the volcano continues accompanied by actively growing lava dome. Read more...On 16 January the volcanologists of the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWI-SRC) did a rock sampling from the western part of the growing lava dome.
During the field sampling a thermal images were taken to measure a current surface temperature approx. 590 °C as hot rising magma pushes its way up to the surface. Glow identified in satellite data suggesting rise of the magma. The aerial survey will be used to create a detailed model of the dome which will help map the growth and volume of the lava dome in the future. [meno]

At the same time, the strombolian activity from the New SE crater's main vent and, less frequently, from the Voragine central crater, decreased a bit (but continue). Both had been quite impressive during the past days, especially the activity at the New SE crater. While fluctuating and at times being intense, it had not intensified to another paroxysm (lava fountaining episode) such as on 13-14, 21 and 22 Dec last month, something that had been more or less expected.

Glowing avalanches from Merapi's lava dome last night (image: Andi Rosadi / VolcanoDiscovery Indonesia)
According to the volcano observatory, the new lava dome was first visible emerging behind the crater breach on 4 January. During 4-7 January, 19 incandescent avalanches were observed; they traveled as far as 800 m downhill, but the risk of larger avalanches increases as the dome grows.
Deformation of the volcanic edifice continued as well: distance shortening was measured between separate points in the northwestern part of the volcano, reaching rates of 15 cm per day. The reason for this contraction could be the removal of magma from internal conduits into the dome. More than 1,300 residents have been temporarily relocated from their homes in threatened areas to evacuation centers. [meno]

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) reported that over the past few days, the western fissure vent within Halema‘uma‘u has escalated from weak spattering to continuous fountaining supplying lava to an open channel that was pouring into the lava lake. A spatter cone has built around both the fountaining vent and its turbulent outflow channel down to the lava lake.
The current lava lake depth is about 196 m (643 ft) with the floating islands inside.

According to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO), a few floating islands formed in the lava lake. The largest island is about 250 m (820 ft) long, 135 m (440 ft) wide and 20 m (65 ft) tall. On 1 January the islands’ edges were about 6 m (20 ft) above the lava lake surface. On 4 Janury the whole island had risen by about 2 m (6-7 ft). The island has rotated and moved both eastward and westward since its formation on the first day of the eruption. On 6 January at about 22:30 local time the island stalled in rotation and movement.
Webcam imagery and eyewitness observations indicate that it formed through a combination of lava interacting with the lake water, early lava flows, and tephra erupted from the early highest fountains. Islands have been observed in Kīlauea lava lakes for more than 100 years. The apparent buoyancy changes of the island may be due to a density increase in the lava lake as gases escape or sloughing off of island material from the subsurface. [meno]

The activity of the volcano continues at elevated levels. Read more...Increased seismic activity during the past few days had been more frequent under the lava dome in the summit crater that produced a series of glowing avalanches from its flanks as we reported in the last update.
Expected dangerous hot pyroclastic flows occurred at 08:02 and 12:50 local time today likely as a result of gravitational collapse of the lava dome caused by more frequent volcano-tectonic earthquakes.

Glowing avalanches from Merapi's lava dome on the evening of 5 Jan 2021 (image: Yohannes Tyas Galih Jati / facebook)
During the past 48 hours, the lava dome in the summit crater produced a series of glowing avalanches from its flanks, sign that new magma is arriving into the dome, causing it to grow.
The lava dome's rims are now almost touching the breach in the crater, which means that very soon it could generate very dangerous glowing avalanches (hot pyroclastic flows) onto the outer slopes of the volcano. [meno]

Over the past several days, seismic activity from the Merapi volcano – Indonesia's most active – has been increasing significantly, suggesting that a more intense phase of volcanic activity is on its way. Read more...Indonesia's volcanologists recorded a record number of volcanic earthquakes under the volcano, namely 720 quakes yesterday and 680 the day before, both of which represented new records in recent months. The average for the month of November had been around 30 before these record figures. It is particularly worrying that many of the newly detected tremors may be caused by rock-breaking magma which has the power to create new magma conduits or widen existing ones inside the volcano itself. These tremors are known as volcano-tectonic quakes and can be quite dangerous.
In response to the latest activity, local authorities have extended the existing state of emergency for Merapi by one more month. As many as 240 people, recently evacuated from homes lying in particularly dangerous places around the slopes of the volcano, will need to be more patient before being allowed to return home. [meno]
