Ongoing steam emissions at White Island volcano today (image: GeoNet) A series of minor steam explosions from the active vent occurred at the volcano at about 15:00 local time yesterday detected by seismic instruments as the volcano observatory GeoNet reported. Read more...Ash was not detected identified in Metservice satellite data, but minor traces of ash might have been present near the vent for a few minutes during the steam explosions. The seismic tremor has increased above the previous average levels in the previous two days, but has since dropped back down to background levels. [ meno] leggere tutti

Gas emissions from White Island volcano today (image: GeoNet) The alert level for the volcano was lowered to "green", as an observation flight on 2 December confirmed that ash emissions from the volcano has now stopped. Read more...Observations and monitoring data over the last 2 weeks indicate that Whakaari/White Island has been progressing on a gradual trend back to lower levels of volcanic unrest that are typical of the long-term behaviour of the volcano. Satellite observations in the last week have also not detected any ash in the steam plume. Hot steam and gas emissions continue from the active vents. A gas measuring flight on 2nd December showed that the main volcanic gases, carbon dioxide (CO2) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) have returned to lower levels, like those seen in September. Low-level gas plumes at White Island volcano today (image: GeoNet) Based on camera footage, aerial observations and gas measurement flights, the amount of ash in the plume appears to have diminished over the last week and is no longer present in the near-persistent steam and gas plume as GeoNet reported. Over the past three weeks, ash has been emitted from the main vent at the back of the lake at Whakaari/White Island. This is consistent with the lack of ash being detected on recent MetService satellite images. The plume is now back to its light colour, composed of steam and volcanic gas, with little to no ash. Read more...The most recent gas flights confirmed an elevated amount of the main volcanic gases (CO2 and SO2) above normal levels. A decrease of seismic activity has been recorded over the past two weeks. The low-level volcanic tremor continues. [ meno] leggere tutti

Continuing gas emissions with small ash content at White Island volcano today (image: GeoNet) The activity of the volcano remains at elevated levels. Read more...Gas-measuring and observation flights on 16 November reported small amounts of ash in the plume. Overall, observations indicate a lower level of ash emission over the past few days. The amounts of CO2 (carbon dioxide) and SO2 (sulfur dioxide) volcanic gases carried in the plume continue to be elevated above background levels but are now slightly lower than last week’s measurements. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions reached to a 710 tonnes/day and 1937 tonnes/day, respectively. [ meno] leggere tutti

Aerial view of White Island volcano with an ash and gas plume (image: @nzherald/twitter) GeoNet reported that an observations during the gas flight confirmed the presence of fine ash material in the plume. The fine particles originate from the main steam vent at the back of the crater lake. Initial analyses of the ash particles suggest that it is loose material from around the vent or underlying conduit being carried by the steam and gas emission. Read more...Some of the particles may be carried a few kilometres downwind but are unlikely to reach the mainland. The gas and steam plume may be noticed on the mainland as weak acid rain. While the gas output observed yesterday is higher than recent observations, other monitoring parameters do not show significant changes. Observations from the flight show there is no substantial change in the location and size of active vents. The rainfall has formed a pool of water on the floor of the 1978/90 Crater, re-forming a shallow lakelet. [ meno] leggere tutti
