Kambalny volcano (southern Kamchatka, Russia): first historic eruption

Eruption from Kambalny volcano (image: Александр Солодиков / youtube)As a surprise, a new explosive eruption started from the stratovolcano, making this its first (confirmed) historic eruption.
Starting from 09:50 local time Friday morning (24 Mar 2017), first signs of activity (steaming, light ash emissions ?) were said to be observed from the volcano. The activity increased during the evening and from 19:30 on, a sustained explosive eruption started to produce a tall ash plume of 5-6000 m height that drifted south over southern Kamchatka.
The continuous ash emission has been going on and by now produced a plume stretching over 800 km. Information from the National Park indicates that the activity, despite the impressive ash plume, is relatively calm and only consists of ash emissions with little ballistic ejecta and no pyroclastic flows (so far).
This would suggest that the origin of the activity might be relatively deep-seated phreatic or phreatomagmatic explosions (as a result of water interacting with magma at some depth inside the conduit).
The last confirmed eruption of the volcano took place more than 500 years ago, around 1350 AD dated by radiometric studies. An alleged eruption around 200 years ago cited in the press is likely a false information or from another volcano.
