Karangetang volcano (Siau Island, Indonesia): new eruption

MODIS hot spots at Karangetang during the past 7 days (MODVOLC, Univ. Hawaii)
A new eruption that started already on 23 April has been producing lava flows from the summit vent. During the past days, this activity has increased.
A number of people have been evacuated from areas at less than 3 km distance from the volcano. The main hazard are pyroclastic flows that the volcano often generates when activity is elevated.
VSI keeps the volcano at alert level 3 (out of 4), at which it has been since 3 Sep 2013.

A volcanic ash plume at 10,000 ft (3 km) altitude and extending 40 nautical miles to the NW was repoerted by Darwin VAAC Monday morning based on satellite data. This could suggest a small eruption occurred at the volcano.

A new eruption could be underway at the volcano. VSI raised the alert to 3 (Siaga, alert) on a scale of 1-4, following the observation of incandescent lava at the summit and glowing rockfalls on the eastern side into the Batuawang ravine. Strong degassing generates a plume rising up to 500 m. ...
